After reading the Macleans article as well as others such as David Schreck, I have concluded that I will not be supporting the STV system.

While I agree that complications should not be a consideration all other reasons for being in favour are unconvincing.

STV will not result in a better slate of candidates to choose from, will not prevent elected officials from "towing the party line" and will not stop persons from switching parties while in office. In fact, you could argue that municipal elections in Nanaimo are similar to the STV system as there are no wards and you can choose 8 persons - did it result in the best people getting elected?

This election I will be supporting Leonard Krog of the NDP because I believe he is by far the best candidate (I couldn't care less about party) and I will be voting no to STV because I do not want my choice to be diluted.

Eric: I understand what you are saying about city council. But that to me is the very point. Nanaimo's Council now has some people to whom I can relate, despite the fact that there may not be enough of them to suit me. The existing fptp system for the province or the feds means that I (and I may be among the majority) am not represented at all.

And there will never be a case where the person who gets the most votes is NOT elected so your concern about diluted votes seems to be unwarranted.

Think about it.
